Reader Owling in Berkeley!
Published on February 23rd, 2010.
I’m pleased to present our first reader submitted owl find! This one comes from my old friend and bandmate Aaron Levin. He spotted this gem down at Urban Ore in Berkeley, a store with one purpose: total recycling. Sounds like wordplay on the old concept of second-hand, but sometimes you need to do that. And besides, it produced this gem.

Holiday Weekend Owling: Show in Los Feliz
Published on February 16th, 2010.
An untimely holiday weekend tire failure resulted in something that I haven’t done in a long time and according to Missing Persons, nobody does: walking in LA. From the Discount Tire Center in Silver Lake, Heather and I made our way to Vermont Ave by way of Santa Monica Blvd and noticed the storefronts up in the Los Feliz Marketplace section had changed a little bit.
We came across a brilliant housewares shop simply called Show and what should my owling eyes find: some very mid-century inspired scores. Let’s take a look.

B&W Owl Plate, $66

Dark Wood Owl Statuette, $40

Two-tone Capsule Shaped Owls, $120 and $66
Quite the little sanctuary indeed. They are on Vermont Ave just above Prospect Ave.

Owling: Pasadena City College Flea Market.
Published on February 8th, 2010.
I’ve been going to this one since I was in high school: what used to get me down there was the seas of collectible vinyl that made this the most unique flea market around. I’ve found the last 5 years or so that this is a choice spot for the most discerning owler, without having to make that deep dive. Check out what we spotted this last Sunday:

Nice owl plate–possibly from a “commemorative” offer shown on daytime TV. The guy selling it was as retired as you can get so he’s highly exposed to such propositions.

I liked this guy (or girl? Inanimate objects are always male in my family) primarily for his loneliness. A solo pink owl just chilling in the 64-degree sun.
Of course we had to walk out with something. Here’s our “owl finds” for the day–you may get a little jealous.

Now we’re talking! How proud I will be to have the girl who flaunts this gem on my arm. The seller says the purse was from the 50s. In AMAZING condition, this was a steal at $20.

Bam! Wasn’t sure what this was at first, but I knew I had to have it. Well, that head comes right off and it’s a fetching glass candy jar. He now takes up residence on my round Lane coffee table. $20 again.
I highly recommend putting this flea market on your list of must-go owling sites.

WHO wants cookies?
Published on January 26th, 2010.
Not sure if these are available chain-wide as i wasn’t able to find it on their website, but the Anthropologie at the Americana in Glendale was carrying these amazing owl cookie jars. I’d probably bake more if I had these guys around:

Tall orange owl cookie jar, $128

Short green owl cookie jar, $98

Flora & Fawna: Clutch too much.
Published on January 22nd, 2010.
Mega points if you caught that as a reference to an AC/DC song…
Anyway, my friend Julianna Lacoste, a.k.a. Robot Jules, makes a bunch of wonderfully smart accessories for ze ladies including our owl find #2 for the week, the Owly Clutch.

Her line, called Flora & Fawna, has a whole store up on Etsy right now that you can buy this ($65) and her other woodland-inspired creations at. Love it? Fan her on Facebook.

Giddygiddy.com: owls for little kids and hipster 20-somethings.
Published on January 20th, 2010.
Last weekend, Heather and I were in San Diego and decided to take the coast back up to LA. Loads of beautiful beaches at our disposal, a necessary bathroom break put us in the quaint seaside town of Solana Beach. Cruising through the well-promoted “Design District,” we came upon a store called Solo which Heather pointed out was aptly named due to the high density of single women.
With a watching eye, I was able to spot the prize owl offering for the week in there, amongst a melee of kids accessories by a company called Giddy Giddy. While I’m pretty sure that I would style my own, unborn daughter in this haute kid-ture, I’m kinda thinking that this would make a great addition to the attire of those old enough to read and appreciate this blog.
Owl change purse ($12):

Owl shoulder bag ($32):

Because of those prices, I think that someone would have to be a really, really good girl to get this as a child, so I’m going to just say Echo Park ladies, pounce on this!
